If you happened to miss the Stephen Ministries announcement at all 3 services this past Sunday (Sept 8), or if you want to find out more, read on to as we reveal the truth behind some of the myths surround Stephen Ministries!
Myth #1 – Stephen Ministries is only something I can be referred to by a pastor.
NO! Stephen Ministers are here to help ANYONE who feels they would benefit from having someone walk along-side them as they navigate something difficult in their life. Sometimes, a pastor will recommend Stephen Ministries to someone, but anyone can contact Anita Davis () our Stephen Ministries Coordinator or James Beck () to find out if Stephen Ministries is right for them.
Myth #2 – Stephen Ministries is only for someone who is in a terrible situation who can’t cope.
NO! Sometimes, we think our problems aren’t “big enough” that we deserve or warrant help. That simply isn’t the case. You do not have to face your problems alone! While Stephen Ministers are trained to deal with grief and divorce, they are also trained in helping walk along-side people who are dealing with job loss, medical crisis, aging and crisis related to starting to adding a family, among others.
Myth #3 – If I have a Stephen Minister, I need to meet with them for years, and I can’t commit to that.
NO! If you are paired with a Stephen Minister, you and your Stephen Minister will work through your problems on your time line. There is no amount specific time you will be paired – it will be up to the both of you to decide! You will meet with your Stephen Minister once a week until both come up with a plan to end the relationship.
Myth #4 – Everyone will know I’m seeking help, and I’m embarrassed!
NO! Only the Stephen Minister co-ordinator and the assigned clergy will know who is paired together. The Stephen Minister you are assigned to is under complete confidentiality and will never disclose your name or the details of your situation.
If you think Stephen Ministry might be something that you would benefit from, please reach out to Anita Davis () our Stephen Ministries Coordinator or James Beck ().
